In this step-by-step guide to the Rat King quest, I’m going to give you the rundown on exactly how to get the Rat King and add this exotic sidearm to your character’s inventory.
Rat King Perks
Before you go through all the trouble of getting this weapon, let me explain its unique perks so you can decide if it’s worth your time. There are two perks for this sidearm:
Rat Pack: This weapon becomes stronger when nearby allies also have it equipped. Stacks up to 6 times. Vermin: Reloading immediately after a kill grants a brief period of invisibility.
The Rat Pack perk requires you to be within a certain range of your allies for it to work, but this could potentially be a huge damage increase. The invisibility after reloading can obviously be useful in many different situations if you have the quick reflexes to make use of it.
How to Get the Rat King and Obtain the Exotic Sidearm
There are several steps that you’ll need to take in order to acquire this weapon. But before you embark on any of them, there’s one important factor that you need to be aware of. You must complete all these steps in a fireteam of at least three people – and everyone must be on the quest when you complete each step. If either of these conditions isn’t met, you won’t get the Rat King sidearm.
First, you need to complete the Enemy of My Enemy Questline on Titan. This is an extra quest line that you unlock after reaching level 20 and completing the main story campaign. You can do this part without being in a fireteam.
You will see a blue mission icon at Sloane, the vendor. Accept this and you will be able to do the Enemy of my Enemy questline.
The final quest here is what drops the quest item you need – Rat King’s Crew. With this in hand, follow these instructions:
Step 1: Complete Three Patrols
The riddle reads:
For this first part of the quest, you’ll need to complete any 3 patrols with a full fireteam of any Guardians who are on the same step in their Rat King quest. Approach these however you like – just make sure they get done, and that everyone in your team is at the same phase in their hunt for this sidearm.
Step 2: Complete Two Public Events
The riddle reads:
Much the patrols step, you’ll need to complete any 2 public events – but you’ll need to do so with a full team of people who are in the same step in this process as you are.
Step 3: Complete Two Crucible Matches
The riddle reads:
Crucible matches are usually done with a team of four people, but in this case you must go in with a team of three – and once again, everyone must be on the same step in the Rat King quest.
Step 4: Complete the Nightfall with at least 5 minutes Remaining
The riddle reads:
To make it through this last step in the quest, you need to complete the Strikes milestone and then reach at least a 230 power level to unlock the Nightfall. But keep in mind that the recommended power level is at least 240.
You’ll need to complete this Nightfall fast enough that you have 5+ minutes remaining when it’s over. Otherwise, you’ll have to try again until you come in under the wire.
This part will likely take the longest, because you will need to get your Power up, get good weapons, and coordinate your team so that you complete the strike quickly. And remember – your fellow firing squad mates must also be on the fourth step in their quest for the Rat King weapon.
